A volumising shampoo does not create hair or thicken it for good. What it does do is leave the roots clean and lifted, which is where volume comes from.
Short answer: Use a volumising shampoo two or three times a week. Apply it to the roots, massage, leave it on for one minute and rinse. It gives body because it leaves the roots clean and free of residue that flattens them; the effect lasts until the next wash and shows most on fine hair.
In short
- Two or three times a week, alternating with your usual shampoo if you need to.
- Leave it on for one minute before rinsing.
- Volume comes from clean roots, not from thickening the hair.
How to get the most out of it
- Apply the shampoo directly to the roots.
- Massage with your fingertips and leave it on for one minute.
- Rinse and use a lightweight conditioner on the ends only.
- Dry the roots with a hairdryer while lifting the hair, or with your head upside down.
What it cannot do
It does not change the thickness of each hair or the amount of hair you have. If you have noticed a sudden loss of density, see a dermatologist. For day to day, there are more ideas in the guide to fine hair and volume.
What is in a volumising shampoo
- Cleansers that leave no residue at the roots: anything left behind weighs hair down.
- Hydrolysed proteins, which settle on the fibre and give it a little more body.
- Few or no heavy ingredients: no butters or rich silicones.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use it every day?
The guideline is two or three times a week. On the other days, use a frequent-use shampoo.
Does it work on thick hair?
The effect is less noticeable. It is designed for fine or limp hair that loses body within a few hours.
Volumising shampoo or clarifying shampoo?
They do different jobs. A clarifying shampoo cleans deeply once or twice a week; a volumising shampoo, used two or three times a week, adds body at the roots. You can alternate them.
Can you use a volumising shampoo on coloured hair?
Yes, if the pack says so. For the first two weeks after colouring, a gentle shampoo is the better choice.
