How often should you wash your hair?

Every day, every other day, twice a week: everyone will tell you something different. The answer depends on your scalp, not on a rule.

Short answer: There is no frequency that works for everyone. Wash your hair when the roots are dirty or greasy: for some people that is every day and for others, twice a week. Washing it daily does not damage it if the shampoo is gentle and made for frequent use and you look after the lengths with conditioner.

In short

  • Your scalp sets the frequency: greasy roots, sport or city life call for more washes.
  • Washing daily does not damage your hair if the shampoo is gentle.
  • What dries hair out is not the frequency, but a harsh shampoo and skipping conditioner.

Guidance by hair type

Your case Usual frequency
Greasy roots or fine hair Daily or every other day
Daily sport After training
Dry, curly or thick hair Two or three times a week
Coloured hair Every two or three days

If you wash it often

  • Choose a frequent-use shampoo, free from SLS and SLES.
  • Massage the scalp; the lather that runs down cleans the lengths.
  • Always conditioner, from mid-lengths to ends.

If your roots get greasy very quickly, see the guide to greasy roots.

How to wash it properly, step by step

  1. Wet your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water, not too hot.
  2. Shampoo only at the roots. Massage for one minute with your fingertips.
  3. Rinse and let the lather clean the lengths.
  4. Conditioner from mid-lengths to ends for two or three minutes, then rinse well.
  5. Squeeze your hair dry with a towel, without rubbing.

Frequently asked questions

Is it true that the more you wash your hair, the greasier it gets?

There is no solid evidence for that rebound effect. What does happen is that a very harsh shampoo irritates the scalp, and you notice it.

Can I go an extra day without washing?

Yes, with a dry shampoo at the roots. It works for one day; it does not replace washing.

Is it bad to wash your hair every day?

No, as long as the shampoo is gentle and made for frequent use and you condition the lengths. What dries hair out is a harsh shampoo, not how often you wash.

How often should you wash curly hair?

Two or three times a week is usually enough. Between washes, you can refresh your curls with water and a leave-in product.
