It is one of the most common questions and the cause of many flat roots. Conditioner has its place, and it is not the scalp.
Short answer: No. Conditioner is applied from mid-lengths to ends, which is the oldest and driest part of your hair. The roots already get natural sebum from the scalp; if you put conditioner on them, they go flat and get dirty sooner. Leave it on for two or three minutes and rinse well.
In short
- From mid-lengths to ends, never on the scalp.
- Leaving it on for two or three minutes is enough.
- Rinse well: conditioner residue is a common cause of weighed-down hair.
How to apply it properly
- After shampooing, squeeze out the excess water with your hands.
- Spread the conditioner from ear level down to the ends.
- Detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
- Wait two or three minutes and rinse. A final rinse with cold water leaves your hair shinier.
How much to use
For medium-length hair, an amount the size of a walnut is enough. If your hair feels slippery or heavy after rinsing, you have used too much or not rinsed enough.
What happens if you put it on your roots
- The roots go flat: conditioner weighs down the hair growing from the scalp.
- They get dirty faster: residue adds to the sebum and the roots look greasy the next day.
- It builds up: over time residue remains that a daily shampoo does not always remove. That is what a clarifying shampoo is for.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use conditioner without shampoo?
Occasionally, yes, but conditioner does not clean the scalp. If you do it often, residue will build up at the roots.
Does greasy hair need conditioner?
Yes, on the ends. Having greasy roots does not stop the lengths from being dry.
What if my scalp is dry?
Conditioner is not the product for that: it is made for the hair fibre, not the skin. A dry scalp has its own care, applied before washing; we explain it in the guide to dry scalp.
Do you have to rinse conditioner out with cold water?
It is not essential. What matters is rinsing it out well. Finishing with lukewarm or cool water leaves hair shinier, but hot water does not cancel out the conditioner.
