Rosemary oil for hair: how to use it properly

Rosemary oil has become famous on social media. Here we tell you how to use it properly, how much to apply and what you can realistically expect from a cosmetic.

Short answer: On dry hair and before washing, apply a few drops of rosemary oil to the roots section by section and massage for two minutes. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, or overnight, and wash it out with two rounds of shampoo. Use it two or three times a week. It is a cosmetic: it cares for the roots, it does not treat hair loss.

In short

  • Rosemary oil for hair is a cosmetic for the scalp: you massage it into the roots before washing.
  • Use it two or three times a week, on dry hair, with a few drops per section and a two-minute massage.
  • A cosmetic cares for the roots; it does not treat hair loss. If your hair loss is unusual, see a dermatologist.

What it is and what it is used for

It is a plant oil with rosemary extract that you massage into the scalp. It is used to care for the roots, the area that almost always gets forgotten: nearly everything we put on our hair goes from mid-lengths to ends.

A cosmetic cares for and improves the look of your hair and scalp. It does not treat hair loss or any condition. If you notice unusual hair loss, the thing to do is see a dermatologist.

How to use it, step by step

  1. On dry hair and before washing, divide your hair into sections.
  2. Put a few drops directly on the roots with the dropper. You do not need more: if you overdo it, it is hard to rinse out.
  3. Massage for two minutes with your fingertips, unhurriedly. The massage is half the product.
  4. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if that suits you.
  5. Wash with two rounds of shampoo to remove it completely.

How often?

Two or three nights a week. What makes the difference is consistency: it is a habit over weeks, not a one-day thing.

Common mistakes

  • Putting it on the lengths: rosemary is meant for the roots.
  • Using too much: hair ends up greasy and hard to rinse.
  • Skipping the massage.

Pure essential oil or diluted rosemary oil

They are not the same. Pure rosemary essential oil is highly concentrated and, applied directly, can irritate the skin. Rosemary hair oils contain the essential oil diluted in a base of plant oils, which is what you can massage into the scalp.

ROMERO SERUM, for example, combines organic sunflower, castor, sweet almond and argan oils with rosemary and mint essential oil and nettle extract. It is ECOCERT COSMOS Organic certified: 100% of its formula is of natural origin and 69% is of organic origin.

A typical week

Day What to do
Two or three nights a week A few drops per section on the roots, a two-minute massage, then leave it on for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
The next morning Shampoo in two rounds to remove it completely.
Once a week If your roots feel loaded, a scalp scrub before shampooing.

How to wash it out properly

Oil does not come out with a single round of shampoo. Apply the shampoo to the roots while your hair is still dry, massage and then add water: that way the shampoo binds to the oil before it gets diluted. Rinse and do a second round. A purifying shampoo such as RESET WASH helps stop the roots feeling heavy.
