Rosemary oil on hair: how often to use it and how long to leave it on

Rosemary oil is one of the products people have most questions about: how many times, for how long and whether you need to wash your hair afterwards. Here is the routine, with no promises.

Short answer: Apply rosemary oil to the scalp two or three times a week, before washing. Spread it drop by drop, massage for two minutes with your fingertips and leave it on for at least thirty minutes, or overnight. Then wash your hair with shampoo, ideally shampooing twice.

In short

  • Two or three times a week, always before washing your hair.
  • At least thirty minutes on the scalp; it can also be left on overnight.
  • It goes on the scalp, not the lengths, and is removed with shampoo.

How to apply it step by step

  1. On dry hair, part your hair into sections and spread a few drops over the scalp.
  2. Massage for two minutes with your fingertips, never your nails.
  3. Leave it on for at least thirty minutes.
  4. Wash with shampoo, shampooing twice to remove the oil properly.

What you can and cannot expect

A rosemary oil cares for the scalp: it leaves it comfortable and feeling clean after washing. It is a cosmetic, not a medicine: it is not intended for scalp conditions. If you notice irritation, stop using it. More background in the guide rosemary oil for hair.

How many drops to use

For the whole scalp, eight to twelve drops are enough. If you have a lot of hair or very thick hair, you can use a few more; if you only want to treat one area, such as the parting or the temples, three or four will do. More oil does not give a better result and is harder to wash out.

A typical week

Day What to do
Monday Oil on the scalp, thirty minutes or overnight, then wash
Wednesday Regular wash
Thursday Oil, then wash
Saturday Scalp scrub before shampoo, instead of the oil

Pure essential oil or a ready-made serum

Pure rosemary essential oil is highly concentrated and is not applied neat to the skin: it is diluted in a plant oil. A rosemary scalp serum comes already diluted and ready to use drop by drop. If you mix your own, patch-test it on a small area of skin first.

Which Nitiel product fits

Frequently asked questions

Can you use rosemary oil every day?

There is no need. Two or three applications a week are enough, and using it daily means washing your hair more often than necessary.

Do you need to rinse it out?

Yes. It is a pre-wash oil: it is removed with shampoo. If you leave it in without washing, the roots end up greasy.

Can you leave rosemary oil on overnight?

Yes. Protect your pillow with a towel and, in the morning, wash with two rounds of shampoo to remove all the oil.

Does rosemary oil work if I have greasy hair?

Yes. It goes on before washing and comes off with shampoo, so it does not leave the roots greasy. Use just the right amount and always do the second round of shampoo.
